この作品は、「オクラ」が英語で “Lady’s finger=婦人の指” と呼ばれると知ったことをきっかけに構想された。
この作品で作家は、4人の女性に「性に関する違和や個人的経験、あるいはトラウマ」について、合計10時間近いインタビューを行った。
インタビューは一方的なものではなく、作家自身も自分の経験や記憶を話る。
そこで話した内容は非常に個人的で繊細なものである。
映像の中では、その会話の中で生まれた抽象的な言葉のカケラを抽出し、作家が読み上げる声が流れていく。
別のシーンでは、その4人の女性に布でできたオクラを指にはめてもらい、
作家からの「記憶にやさしく触れてください」「攻撃して防御してください」などの指示が飛ぶ。
女性たちは言葉を交わさず、指と手でアクションを行なっていく。
彼女たちのパフォーマンスは一回きりのもので、時に戸惑いながらもお互いの手に触れ、言葉を使わない表現を試みる。
これらのシーンが交錯し、映像が構成されていく。
一見すると抽象的に思える会話とアクションの連続だが、映像は確信的な中心の周りをぐるぐると回っている。
その「確信」は、見る人によって異なる景色として立ち上がってくるだろう。
This work was conceived after the artist learned that okra is called “lady’s finger” in English.
For this piece, the artist conducted nearly ten hours of interviews with four women about
“discomfort related to sexuality, personal experiences, or trauma.” The interviews were not one-sided;
the artist also spoke about her own experiences and memories.
What was shared in these conversations was highly personal and delicate.
In the video, fragments of abstract words that emerged during these conversations are extracted,
and the artist’s voice reading them aloud flows through the work.
In another scene, the four women are asked to place okra made of fabric on their fingers.
The artist gives instructions such as, “Please touch the memory gently,” and “Attack and defend.”
Without speaking, the women perform actions using only their fingers and hands.
Their performance takes place only once. At times hesitating,
they touch one another’s hands and attempt forms of expression that do not rely on words.
These scenes intersect and gradually form the structure of the video.
At first glance, the sequence of conversations and actions may appear abstract,
yet the video circles repeatedly around a certain conviction at its center.
That “conviction” will likely emerge as a different image for each viewer.
